Nantahala School received special recognition from the North Carolina Department of
Public Instruction on Monday, Sept. 8, during a graduation recognition ceremony in Raleigh.
The school was one of eight in the state that was recognized for achieving a 100 percent
graduation rate. Principal Chris Baldwin and Superintendent Dan Brigman were present and
received an award for the school from State Superintendent June Atkinson.
“It was a tremendous honor for the school and students and a nice recognition for the hard
work over the past school year,” Baldwin said.
“The Macon County School System is very proud to have Nantahala School recognized at
the state level for graduating 100 percent of their senior class for the 2007-08 academic
year,” Brigman said. “The staff, students, administration and entire community of Nantahala
have maintained a strong focus on student achievement and should feel proud of this and
many other accomplishments.”
The ceremony took place during Graduation Awareness Week, which was Sept. 7-13. In
addition to the awards ceremony, key leaders representing education associations, community
groups, business and industry and the faith based community signed a Call to Action and
pledged to work throughout the state to raise awareness of the importance of high school
graduation. Other schools that received recognition for achieving 100 percent graduation rates were
Burke Middle School in Burke County, Weaver Education Center, Greensboro College
Middle College and Early College at Guilford in Guilford County.
