CITIZEN-TIMES.com5 WNC schools listed in nationwide ratings for college prep
From staff reports December 3, 2007 12:15 am ASHEVILLE — Five Western North Carolina high schools were recognized as being some of the best college preparers in the country in the first America’s Best High Schools ratings list compiled by U.S. News and World Report. No North Carolina school received a gold medal signifying the school was one of the top 100 in the country on the college-readiness index, a measure of the degree to which students master some college-level material. Reynolds High, in Buncombe County, and Murphy High, in Cherokee County, received silver medals. Bronze medals went to Hiwassee Dam High, in Cherokee County; Nantahala School, in Macon County; and Polk County High. Silver medals were awarded to all schools with a college-readiness index of at least 20, but that are not in the top 100 nationally. Bronze medals went to schools that either do not offer Advanced Placement courses or do not achieve a college readiness index of at least 20 but successfully meet two other key performance indicator criteria.
